Abstract

Biological damage in collections is caused by the action of insects and microorganisms, especially fungi, which cause cracks, breaks and discoloration on the surface of leaves. Keeping in mind the importance of preserving Herbarium UPTC biological collection, 5572 specimens of angiosperms were examined to determine the state of contamination by fungi or insects. The insects were collected with brush and dissecting needles, were preserved in alcohol 70% and were determined to taxonomic level possible. Scraping areas with discoloration, breaks and fungi was used and the sedimentation method in environmental sampling plate as using PDA medium. The genre of fungi Aspergillus, Cladosporium, Penicillium, Alternaria, Fusarium and Verticillium were identified. The yeast were found in two specimens, the Bacilos Gram+ sporulated in 10 specimens and Bacilos Gram- sporulated in one specimen. The discovery of 12 individuals with fungal contamination and the presence of nine insects, especially immature forms of the order Psocoptera, in seven specimens, indicate that the handling of the Herbarium UPTC collection to the time when this study was conducted was in a relatively good state of preservation. However, the presence of agents of biodeterioration identified suggests periodic monitoring, also implementing an integrated management plan that includes long-term reduction or elimination of chemical control to preserve the integrity of the specimens and reduce the risk of people in charge of the collection.
